About this course
High-risk work activities increase the chance of serious accidents. Fortunately, a permit-to-work system manages hazards and creates safe conditions before, during, and after the activity.
This course is for employers and managers who want to learn best practice for permit-to-work systems. They’ll learn what the system is and what types of work need a permit; what information to include in a permit; and the duties of everyone involved.
The course is concise and informative, providing users with a downloadable certificate upon completion.

Business benefits
Every workplace carries some level of risk, and the Health and Safety at Work Act says that employers have a duty to protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of employees and anyone else in or around the workplace. This is done by creating safe systems of work, which are procedures and measures that manage hazards and make sure that work is carried out safely.
To discover what the hazards are, you carry out a risk assessment, which is required under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations. The assessment must highlight what the potential hazards of a work activity are, who might get hurt by them, how likely each hazard is to cause harm, and what control measures are in place, or are needed, to minimise the risks.
Sometimes, there are complex, dangerous activities that carry higher levels of risk, which need an extra protective layer – known as the permit-to-work system. Activities like working in a confined space are known to be high-risk so it’s obvious that they need a permit, but you’ll also discover that other less-obvious activities can need a permit too. Think of the permit-to-work system like the air traffic control tower in an airport – it manages hazards; coordinates people; and monitors activities to help prevent accidents and allow the complex operation to run smoothly
