Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) is a widely recognised safety procedure that ensures that dangerous machinery and energy sources are properly shut off and are not started up unexpectedly while maintenance or service work is being completed.
When working with heavy machinery, it only takes a small accident or a bit of carelessness to lead to very serious injuries. Activating equipment or power sources before tasks are complete can put people maintaining or servicing them at risk, which is why it is essential that employees who may have to practice the procedure have a fundamental understanding of it.

Whilst there are no specific UK or Irish regulations relating solely to Lockout/Tagout legal requirements, Lock Out/Tag Out regulations are contained within broader Health and Safety regulations within different jurisdictions.
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 ensures that work equipment should not result in health and safety risks regardless of age, condition or origin. It applies to all workplaces and demands that lock-off should be used to prevent unexpected start-up of machinery or equipment.
