About this course
This brief Abrasive Wheels training course is designed to be used alongside practical training to increase workplace safety, awareness of legal responsibilities, and reduce the chance of an injury occurring at your workplace. It does not replace practical training.
How Can Abrasive Wheels Training Prevent Accidents and Injuries?
If used incorrectly, abrasive wheels can be incredibly dangerous. In fact, over half of all recorded injuries are due to unsafe systems of work or errors made by the operator. Whether a result of broken wheels, flying particles, or serious friction burns, accidents from abrasive wheels can be severe, resulting in hospitalisation and all too often, even blindness.
Abrasive Wheels training ensures that the necessary control measures are in place to prevent serious incidents from occurring. This includes step-by-step instructions on handling and installing abrasive wheels, as well as information on safety checks and spotting issues.

Why is this Abrasive Wheel training important?
Compliance
It’s important that you comply with the law and know how it affects you and how you work.
The main legislation relevant to using abrasive wheels is the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (or P.U.W.E.R). Firstly, this document makes it clear that any work equipment and machinery must be fit for purpose. Secondly, it requires that anyone using a piece of equipment – in this case, an abrasive wheel – must receive adequate training and safety information before using that equipment.
Every employer shall ensure that all persons who use work equipment have received adequate training for purposes of health and safety, including training in the methods which may be adopted when using the work equipment, any risks which such use may entail and precautions to be taken. – The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, Section 9 (1)
The regulations deal with the work equipment and machinery used every day in workplaces and aim to keep people safe wherever equipment and machinery are used at work. PUWER replaces the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992, carrying forward the existing requirements with a number of changes and additions.
