Your Legal Responsibilities
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
This is the key legislation that covers all things Health & Safety in the UK. This Act is enforced by the HSE in partnership with local authorities as well as a number of other Acts and Statutory Instruments that are relevant to the workplace. Under this act, employers have a duty to ‘ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees’ and the premises.
The Licensing Act 2003
This act is all about working in an organisation that has a license to sell alcohol. Organisations which sell alcohol have a responsibility to uphold these aims. The four aims are to prevent crime and disorder, to promote public safety, to prevent public nuisance, and, to protect children from harm.
The Food Hygiene Regulations 2006
The Food Hygiene Regulations 2006 lay the foundations of basic hygiene requirements for all food businesses, from premises and equipment to staff training and hygiene. Critically, proof of appropriate practice and staff training are required by law. This legislation applies to all organisations handling food for human consumption.
Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
Under these regulations, Manual Handling is taken to include the lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, carrying, and movement of anything by hand or bodily force. The regulations also state employers must ensure that workers receive proper training and information on how to handle loads correctly.
