Posted 11 seconds ago

Wondering how to increase resilience at work? We’re here to help. Employee resilience is vital in times of change, hardship and adversity. A resilient employee is more likely to be motivated by a change or challenge and see it as a positive opportunity for learning. Who wouldn’t want that?

What is resilience?

[Resilience is] the ability to be happy, successful, etc. again after something difficult or bad has happened – Cambridge Dictionary

Many employers value resilience as a highly soughtafter attribute in employees. In fact, a study by CV-Library found that 57% of employers see resilience as a key skill for candidates.

We’ve pulled together a few tips on how to improve resilience at work…

The importance of employee resilience

Having a workforce that champions resilience comes with huge benefits to your staff as well as your business. Some benefits of strong employee resilience include:

  • Helps lower employee stress
  • Reduces burnout
  • Improves handling of tasks and challenges
  • Boosts teamwork
  • Develops better wellbeing at work

How to increase resilience at work

Self-regulate

This describes the ability to keep your long term goals and values a priority, so that your day to day decisions keep you on that path. If you’ve given up chocolate for a month and are really craving some, but you resist… that’s behavioural self-regulation!

Emotional self-regulation is the same, such as calming yourself down when you are angry.

Opposite Action

If you’re feeling down, do the ‘opposite action’ of how you feel. This will help you create a positive experience out of something negative.

For example, you may want to skip the gym after finding out that you didn’t get the promotion, but self-regulation encourages you to keep to your routine and to not let unpredictable hiccups keep you from doing the things you love. Get to the gym as planned.

Write the negative things down

If you find it hard to cheer yourself up, or you tend to focus on the negative side of things, try writing down your thoughts. It’s a way of getting things off your chest without speaking with anyone, if that makes you more comfortable. Seeing things written down will help you ‘see’ the situation more clearly.

Write the positive things down

You can start with five things that you are most proud of. This could be anything: from sky-diving and defeating a fear, to becoming a parent or getting over a break-up. This list will remind you of your inner resilience and it will encourage you to push your limits in the present and the future too.

Provide Resilience Training

Providing your employees with the tools and techniques they need to further develop their resilience skills is critical in helping them better handle challenging or stressful situations. It will teach them how to adapt and to come out of these situations stronger and wiser.
