How lockdown has created a higher risk of eyestrain
Posted 3 years ago
Fight for Sight, an eye health charity is urging people to learn the “20-20-20” rule to help protect their eyesight as data shows a huge increase in screen usage during lockdown.
The research charity commissioned a survey from polling company YouGov and found that out of the 2,000 adults surveyed, around half used screens more frequently since COVID-19 started, and over a third of those believed their eyesight had worsened.
The survey also suggested one in five adults were less likely to get an eye test now than before the pandemic.
Some other notable statistics from the report included:
- 23% report having had headaches/migraines as a result of DSE use since COVID-19
- 9% were unlikely to get an eye test because they believed it was too expensive
- 33% report that their screentime has increased by more than two hours a day
What is the “20-20-20” rule?
The “20-20-20” rule is a mnemonic for DSE users to use in order to reduce risks associated with too much screen time, like eye strain.
It is advised that DSE users look at something that is 20 feet away, for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes.
Can I still visit an optician during lockdown?
As of the time of writing this, Government guidance states that under lockdown people can leave home for medical appointments and to “avoid injury, illness or risk of harm”.
Fight for Sight emphasise the importance of receiving regular eye tests and want to remind people that the majority of opticians are open for appointments throughout lockdown.
