About this course

The EU’s AI Act is the world’s first piece of legislation that regulates how AI is developed and used, and it provides much needed protection from the risks posed by modern AI.

The lack of regulation hasn’t really been a problem until recently, because AI was fairly limited in its commercial, everyday applications. However, with the rise of any new technology, there are risks. Data privacy, bias and discrimination, lack of transparency, physical and psychological safety and security, accountability, and manipulation and deception are just a few of the real concerns posed by the rise of AI.

In this EU AI Act course, we’ll explore the AI Act and find out exactly what protections it offers, who’s affected by it, and how it’s enforced. We’ll also consider what this piece of EU legislation means for organisations in the UK and what you can start doing now.

Why is this training important?

Business benefits

The AI Act recognises the real-world dangers that unregulated AI can pose and it aims to offer safeguards against these risks, so we can enjoy the benefits of useful, trustworthy AI.

The EU’s AI Act applies to any individual or organisation that develops, sells, or uses AI (or its outputs) within the EU. This means that non-EU based organisations – including those in the UK – are also affected by the Act if their AI systems or AI outputs are used or sold within the EU. In fact, if a non-EU organisation’s AI (or its outputs) interacts with an EU citizen in any way, the AI Act applies. So, it pays to know whether it applies to you.

The risks posed by AI are pretty severe, so the penalties for breaching the AI Act are equally severe.

The largest fines that can be imposed are up to €35 million or 7% of an organisation’s total global income – whichever is more. For some other breaches, the fines can be up to €15 million or 3% of total global income.
