There are many reasons why your employer might provide you with RPE and make sure that you wear it. Some reasons include when:
- There’s still a risk of exposure even after all other control measures are in place
- There’s a short-term or infrequent risk of exposure and implementing other controls is impractical
- Other control measures are being put in place
- You need a safe exit during an emergency
- You’re c
arrying out maintenance or emergency work - There’s a temporary failure of controls
- You’re b
eing rescued by emergency workers
Your employer is also responsible for providing you with information, instruction, and training to keep you safe and on how to properly use, clean, store, and maintain any RPE they provide to you.
This designated person, or people, may be responsible for overseeing RPE policies and procedures, training staff, deciding where safety signs should be placed, and helping contractors, visitors, and new members of staff understand your organisation’s RPE policies and procedures.
