About this course
Person-centred values tell you how to work in a person-centred way. Generally, there are 6 recognised values for person-centred care and they are:
- Care
- Compassion
- Competence
- Communication
- Courage
- Commitment
Alternatively, the 6 Cs help you to understand that each individual has to be placed at the centre of their care and support plans. The plan must fit the individual, rather than the individual being made to fit an existing routine. This is also known as Person Centred Working.
Our course effectively explores the key principles and will enable carers to work in a ‘person-centred’ way. The course includes the legal and regulatory framework, the Care Act, tools to support person-centred approaches and risk enablement.
This course works alongside our 14 other awareness courses that make up the Care Certificate Standards.
You can access our free worksheet that has been designed to accompany our online Person Centred Care Training course. In each section, there is a box for you to
tick when you have watched the relevant slide in our course. You can also take notes that will help you during your practical assessment at work.
This course equips learners with the knowledge that’s required to be put into practice in the workplace, whereby they can do the ‘practical’ part of their training, followed by having the Care Certificate supplied to them by their management as they meet the required standards. These courses provide part of training but practical training is still required to obtain the care certificate.

Why is this training important?
Compliance
It’s important that you comply with the law and know the ways in which it affects you and the way you work.
Standard 5 of the 15 standards that make up the Care Certificate is working in a person-centred way. Workers in the care sector are shown what is expected of them in the Care Certificate, which is an agreed set of standards that employees need to pass. It forms part of an induction programme that should be covered if you are new to the care sector.
The Care Certificate was developed by Skills for Care, Health Education England and Skills for Health.
The Care Act 2014
The Care Act 2014 sets out in one place, local authorities’ duties in relation to assessing people’s needs and their eligibility for publicly funded care and support.
