Anti-Bullying Week 2022
Posted 2 years ago
Did you know that a quarter of employees think their company turns a blind eye to workplace bullying and harassment? Unsurprisingly, there are many advocates for better working conditions urging organisations to train managers and employees to handle such conflicts better.
Between 14-18 November it is Anti-Bullying Week. This awareness campaign, run by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, is all about showing an anti-bullying stance and encouraging everyone to choose kindness. It provides an opportunity for employers to reflect on their procedures around the matter, as well as encouraging anyone experiencing bullying to feel more confident in seeking support.
When someone experiences bullying, the effects are often long-lasting and have a negative impact on mental health.
Research shows that workplace bullying can bring about anxiety, depression, burnout, reduced self-esteem, life satisfaction, job satisfaction, job performance, and organisational commitment – all of which are devastating to the victim, and also have consequences to businesses.
Workplace bullying could produce a decline in productivity of up to 40%. Furthermore, up to 70% of bullied employees will leave an organisation, and there are potential legal consequences where organisations have not done enough to recognise and deal with bullying or harassment.
What can businesses do?
Creating a healthy workplace culture is vitally important. Staff need to feel happy, supported and safe so they remain productive, proactive, and successful. Tackling bullying must be a top priority, as well as reinforcing anti-bullying policies to help convey a message that it will not be tolerated.
While effective leadership is important to help achieve this, it is also important to educate employees surrounding values and acceptable behaviours to help them feel comfortable coming forward if they have any concerns or issues at work surrounding inclusivity.
